This past year has brought a lot of unforeseen challenges both personally and professionally. I signed up for the marathon as a way to motivate myself to do something I have never done before.

Have you ever run in a marathon before?
I ran the virtual United Airlines half marathon in March with a few co-workers but this will be my first live marathon ever!

Why do you want to run with Team EKF and raise funds for our mission?
As a nurse that works in the hospital setting I see first hand how difficult having a child in the hospital can be on not only the child but their families as well. So I’m very grateful that there our organizations like Team EFK that can provide support to these children and their families. And it’s an honor to help support them and raise funds for their mission!

What is a fun fact about you?
The energy from the crowd and the motivation from all the runners was amazing. From that day, I knew I had to add it to my bucket list.

Why do you want to run with Team EKF and raise funds for our mission?
EKF is such a wonderful foundation with a great mission. When I got the opportunity to partner with them, I jumped on it. To be able to support a great cause and get the opportunity to run was a win win.

If you had to give people one piece of advice, related to anything, what would it be?
It has always been a dream of mine to run the New York Marathon, and after researching different charity organizations I could run it with, I felt even more excited at the prospect of running with team EKF.

Have you ever run in a marathon before?

I have actually run an Ultra Marathon (100 miles in 24 hours) but have never run an official Marathon. I was registered for the Big Sur marathon in 2020 but it was canceled due to COVID- 19.

Why do you want to run with Team EKF and raise funds for our mission?

After doing my research into different charity organizations, I believe the mission of Team EKF is worth committing to as I feel strongly about the cause of aiding impact-driven pediatric programs and supporting the child life community. I’ve seen how harsh healthcare can be for a child, and I’m honored to be able to play a small role in correcting that truth.

What is a fun fact about you?

A fun fact is that I used to be a Division I NCAA Fencer in college!

If you had to give people one piece of advice, related to anything, what would it be?
The most widely applicable advice I can think of is: You can’t get to point B before knowing where point A is, and baby steps turn into huge leaps.

We are so grateful to Jarett for his dedication to enCourage Kids and we cannot wait to cheer him on during the marathon on November 7th! When I reflect back on the past 30 years and all that I have accomplished, my proudest achievement has been my work with a dog by my side. Back in 2003, our child life program started a facility dog program and welcomed Hazel, a sweet two-year-old Labrador/Golden Retriever from Canine Companions for Independence.

My entire career has been at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. For the past 24 years, I have worked exclusively with the pediatric oncology population. Most would say they could never survive in this position for as long as I have.

But, I firmly believe it is because of the endless joy and rewarding outcomes that my work with my current facility dog, Glimmer brings. Glimmer is a very important tool in my work with patients and families. Because of her skill set, I am able to utilize her in my daily interventions that would otherwise not be possible with an untrained dog. Glimmer’s sweet demeanor and softest fur make even the most difficult situations a bit better.

My journey with my first facility dog, Millie began back in 2004. This means I have worked over half of my career with a facility dog by my side! Both Hazel and Millie really paved the way and pioneered so much of what we now are seeing across the country with facility dog programs. Through all of the changes in healthcare, the one thing that has remained constant is the incredible support our child life and facility dog programs have received from our hospital. We have grown our program within the Sutter Health hospital system to 14 dogs, all working in various settings within Northern California. There are currently six dogs on our campus, matched up with Child Life Specialists. What I love most about having Glimmer by my side are the unexpected nuggets that come from each day. Dogs have a way of bringing people together in both joy and sorrow.

So many people have asked me through the years, “How is a facility dog different from a therapy dog?” Here are a few of the main differences, but this list is just the beginning.

Pet therapy dogs are typically volunteers that have permission to visit a public facility. They are required to pass a “canine good citizen” test or obedience test through AKC. They are usually registered by a therapy dog program and ongoing follow-up is not required.

Facility dogs are expertly trained and matched with professional, certified handlers. The dogs are trained for approximately two years and work a minimum of 20 hours a week. They engage in interventions or tasks that benefit the patient or client with the direction of their handler. The handler and facility dog pass a standardized public safety exam through Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and have ongoing certifications.

If you are considering adding a facility dog to your program, I would advise you to lean in and ask the experts, do your homework on the various organizations that train and provide facility dogs, but most of all run, don’t walk. You won’t regret it!

Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs at no charge to the recipient. Needles and cords can be frightening if you don’t know what they do and how they help. Teddy works with the Child Life Specialist to explain to Luke exactly how they work and that they aren’t so scary after all. Teddy then volunteers to get his blood drawn and receive an IV to show his friend everything that will happen. In the process, Luke gets to help the Child Life Specialist with the needle and fluid bag, learning all about the equipment that surrounds him in his room.

When it is time for the Luke’s IV, Teddy is right there with him, holding his hand, with a matching IV in his arm. Thanks to Teddy’s preparation, he is no longer scared or nervous about his IV. Rather, he feels confident that he can do anything with the encouragement of his new friend.

We do this by helping humanize healthcare for children and their families by resourcing impact-driven pediatric programs and supporting the Child Life Community. One of these programs is our Send a Smile, Send a Bear Program. We work with pediatric facilities to send cuddly Bears into the arms of the young patients in their care. Pediatric patients see a friend in the enCourage Kids’ Bear’s smiling face while Child Life Specialists, nurses, and doctors use the Bear for medical play to help young patients learn what to expect during a hospital visit. Each Bear is individually wrapped and meets hospital protocols for health standards.

Monday, September 9th is National Teddy Bear Day. It is an opportunity to spread awareness for our Bear Program, as well as for the Child Life Community and the important role they play in a patient’s hospital experience. In honor of this day, we send hundreds of Teddy Bears to hospitals around the country to provide comfort and joy to pediatric patients. The Bear is instrumental in in reducing anxiety and fear in children while in a clinical environment.

To celebrate National Teddy Bear Day, we are sharing the adventures of Teddy as he travels to help two young patients through a scary hospital experience. However, there are times when young patients have an extended stay or must return to the hospital multiple times. He recently shared with us a moving anecdote of two pediatric patients he spent much time singing with during his visits.

Lliam explains, “given the seriousness of what some [young patients] have to go through, I am amazed that I don’t have to do what I did this month more often.” Both children I said goodbye to had various medical complications that eventually became too much for their bodies. I also have been singing with both of them for their entire lives.“

The first story he recalled was about a 15-year-old girl. Her parents asked Lliam to be a part of her Celebration of Life reception. His songs, and the amazing testimonies given, all emphasized the incredible impact she left on the world. He says, “The service was a perfect mixture of empathy, artistry, and heartfelt connection with the child, so there was plenty of shared encouragement.”

As the family gathered around the boy’s hospital bed to be with him in his final moments, Lliam sat in the background and played soothing, ambient music. After playing for some time, he gave his love to the family and child and left them to grieve their unimaginable loss.

Lliam expressed that as difficult as moments like these are, that he is grateful for the positivity that his music helped to make possible. “As hard as these times are, I and the families are well aware of all the times we’ve spent together filled with music, laughter, and exuberance. This is why they accept me as part of their farewells; they know the child’s life was better because of our musical bond, thanks to the support of enCourage Kids.”
